Highly regarded financial services lawyer David Mayhew has joined Thirty Nine Essex Street.
David is widely recognised as a leading advocate and adviser in contentious financial services regulatory work and has a wealth of experience working for major financial services institutions facing regulatory and related proceedings, as well as experience as a regulator himself.
His arrival at Thirty Nine Essex Street highlights the dynamic growth of one of the country’s leading sets who offer expertise across commercial, common, construction, costs, environmental and planning, public, regulatory and disciplinary law.
With a distinguished career that includes partnerships at Clifford Chance LLP and Herbert Smith LLP, David also honed his extensive knowledge working within the Financial Services Authority, where he was appointed as the FSA’s Leading Advocate in 2001, a role that he held for four years, before becoming Acting Director for Enforcement in 2005.
His latest appointment saw him return to his native New Zealand as Commissioner for Financial Advisers and a Member of the Securities Commission which he held until April 2011 when he came back to London to resume private practice. Recent work includes advising corporates and senior executives in inquiries or enforcement action relating to senior management responsibilities in the context of the global financial crisis.
David Barnes, Chief Executive and Head of Clerking, at Thirty Nine Essex Street said “We are absolutely delighted that David is joining Chambers. His reputation within the world of financial services is second to none and his arrival at Thirty Nine Essex Street, along with the set’s recent win as ‘Professional Discipline Set of the Year’ at the Chambers Bar Awards, will cement Chambers’ reputation, as well as enhance our public and regulatory law strength in this area.”
Commenting on his decision to go to the Bar, David Mayhew said "I am pleased to be joining such a progressive set and look forward to the challenge of working with, and providing value to, clients as a barrister."
